A Family Legacy in the Cutting Horse World

Adan Banuelos is an American cutting horse trainer and competitor recognized for his accomplishments in the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) and for continuing a multi-generation family legacy in the cutting horse industry. Based in Texas, Banuelos has become one of the most visible figures in modern cutting competition through major event victories and NCHA earnings.

Banuelos was born into a prominent horse training family. He is the son of Ascencion Banuelos, who became the first Mexican-American inductee into the NCHA Hall of Fame (2007). Growing up around ranching and performance horses, Adan Banuelos was exposed early to cattle work, horsemanship, and the competitive cutting horse industry. His father's influence helped shape his foundation as a horseman and competitor.

Cutting — Cow Sense, Athleticism, and Precision

Cutting is a western performance discipline in which horse and rider separate a single cow from a herd and prevent it from returning. The sport places significant emphasis on a horse's instinctive cow sense, athleticism, and responsiveness. Banuelos built his professional reputation through consistent performances in major cutting horse events across the United States.

Banuelos has surpassed $8 million in NCHA lifetime earnings and was the NCHA's #1 leading open rider in 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022. In 2020 he won the NCHA Open Futurity Championship aboard All Spice (who was the 2021 NCHA Open Horse of the Year), and he captured The American Performance Horseman title in 2023 and 2024. In 2017, at age 28, he became one of the youngest riders ever inducted into the NCHA Riders Hall of Fame, an honor awarded to riders who meet elite competitive benchmarks established by the association.

Futurities, Derbies, and Aged Events

Banuelos has trained and shown numerous high-level cutting horses during his career. His program became known within the industry for preparing horses for futurities, derbies, and aged events — among the most competitive levels in cutting horse competition. In addition to open competition, his influence extends through horse development, coaching, and mentorship within the western performance horse community.

Like many professional cutting horse trainers, his work combines horse development, cattle knowledge, conditioning programs, and competitive strategy. Professional cutting trainers often spend years developing horses from futurity prospects into seasoned competition horses capable of succeeding at major events.

Mexican-American Heritage and the Modern Era

Banuelos is part of a broader lineage of Mexican-American horsemen within western performance horse sports. The Banuelos family name has become widely recognized within the cutting horse industry, reflecting decades of participation at the highest levels of competition. His success represents both personal accomplishment and the continuation of a family tradition deeply connected to the history of the American West and working cow horse culture.

As the cutting horse industry evolved with larger purses, expanded media coverage, and growing international participation, Banuelos remained among the riders associated with the sport's modern era. His career reflects the increasing professionalism of western performance horse competition while maintaining ties to traditional ranch horsemanship foundations.

Today, Adan Banuelos continues to be recognized as one of the leading figures in professional cutting horse competition and an important representative of contemporary western horse training.
