Born near Bergamo — Grew Up on the Family Dairy Farm

From a Dairy Farm in Bergamo to the Top of American Reining

Andrea Fappani is an Italian-born reining horse trainer, competitor, and clinician who became one of the most accomplished riders in the history of the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA). Over the course of his career, Fappani established himself as the leading money earner in NRHA history and became widely recognized for his influence on modern reining competition, horse training, and professional horsemanship.

Fappani was born and raised near Bergamo, Italy, where he grew up on the family dairy farm and shared a love of reining with his father. His early exposure to horses came through rural agricultural life and a growing interest in western riding disciplines. As a young rider in Italy, Fappani developed an interest in reining — a western performance horse discipline judged on patterns that demonstrate speed control, precision, stops, spins, lead changes, and overall communication between horse and rider.

He moved to the United States in the late 1990s to pursue a professional reining career, spending formative years working under Todd Bergen before going out on his own in 2003. His relocation marked a significant turning point both personally and professionally, as he entered the center of the American reining industry.

Record-Setting Victories and Milestones

Fappani's rise in professional reining accelerated during the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 2001, he became the first international rider to win the NRHA Open Futurity — one of the sport's premier events — aboard RR Star. That victory also produced the first runoff in NRHA Open Futurity history, and it helped establish him as a major force in professional reining competition.

Throughout the following decades, Fappani built a record-setting career that included multiple NRHA Futurity championships, NRHA Derby victories, National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) championships, and major wins at leading reining events across the United States and internationally. He won the NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open four times and claimed the NRHA Derby Level 4 Open, and in 2006 became the youngest NRHA Million Dollar Rider at that time. He became known for his consistency, adaptability, and ability to develop elite-level reining horses over multiple generations of competition.

Several horses became closely associated with Fappani's success in the show pen. Among the best known were RR Star, All Bettss Are Off (2020 NRHA Futurity Open Champion), Lil Joe Cash, and Vintage Chex. These horses contributed to some of his most important victories and became influential names within modern reining bloodlines and competition history.

Training, Teaching, and Fappani Performance Horses

In addition to competition, Fappani became widely respected as a trainer and teacher. Through clinics, demonstrations, coaching programs, and media appearances, he contributed to the growth of reining both in the United States and internationally. His training style became associated with precision, athletic preparation, and refinement in advanced reining maneuvers.

Outside the arena, Fappani operates Fappani Performance Horses in Scottsdale, Arizona, alongside his wife Tish Fappani, who also became a major competitor in NRHA non-pro competition. Their operation includes horse training, breeding, coaching, and stallion management.

His career reflects the globalization of western performance horse competition and the increasing international influence within the American Quarter Horse industry.
