From the Australian Outback to the World Stage
Chris Cox is one of the most recognized horse trainers and clinicians in modern horsemanship, known internationally for his work in colt starting, ranch horsemanship, cutting horses, and horse-rider communication. Through clinics, television programs, competitions, and educational events, Cox became widely respected for teaching practical horsemanship built around timing, feel, leadership, and clear communication between horse and rider. His combination of cowboy experience, competitive success, and public teaching helped make him one of the most visible clinicians in the horse industry.
Chris Cox was born in Kissimmee, Florida, but moved with his family to Australia when he was very young. He grew up on a cattle station on Prince of Wales Island off the coast of Australia, where horses were an essential part of daily ranch work. Cox often described his early years as being shaped by long days gathering cattle across rough country — experiences that taught him practical cowboy skills and horsemanship from a young age. He began training horses at approximately seven years old.
Four-Time Champion — The Only Undefeated Record in the Event's History
Cox won the Road to the Horse colt-starting competition four times, making him the only four-time undefeated champion in the event's history. His victories over other nationally known clinicians helped establish him as one of the leading colt starters and public horsemen of his era.
Practical Horsemanship Rooted in Ranch Work
Growing up in Australia gave Cox a foundation rooted in stockmanship and real ranch work rather than purely show-ring competition. Those experiences became central to his training philosophy, which emphasized practical results, confidence, and developing horses that remained useful and dependable outside the arena. Cox has frequently stated that horses should be trained in ways that create willing partners rather than fearful or mechanical performers.
As a young adult, Cox returned to the United States to pursue a professional career in horse training. Over time he developed a growing reputation through clinics, demonstrations, and colt-starting competitions, eventually establishing his horsemanship business in Texas. In addition to colt starting, Cox competed in cutting horse, reined cow horse, and team roping events — his versatility across multiple western disciplines contributing to his reputation as a complete horseman.
