Ranch Life, Ranch Horses, and a New Approach to Training

John Lyons is an American horse trainer, clinician, author, and educator best known for his role in popularizing natural horsemanship and conditioned-response horse training methods in the United States. He was born in 1947 and later lived and worked extensively in Colorado and Arizona. Lyons grew up around livestock and ranch life and developed an early interest in horses and horsemanship.

Before becoming nationally known, Lyons spent years training horses and working with riders in practical ranch and riding environments. He later stated publicly that his interest in horse training intensified after observing horse handling methods he believed were unnecessarily dangerous or ineffective for both horses and riders. According to published biographies, Lyons officially began presenting horse training clinics and symposia in 1980.

Conditioned Response — Consistency, Timing, and Clear Communication

Lyons became associated with a style of horse training that emphasized conditioned response, repetition, timing, and clear communication cues. His methods focused on teaching horses through consistency and incremental learning rather than fear-based training techniques. Industry publications frequently described his approach as emphasizing safety, predictability, and practical solutions for everyday horse owners.

Unlike some trainers who focused primarily on elite competition horses, Lyons built much of his audience among recreational riders, ranch horse owners, and amateur horse enthusiasts. His clinics often addressed common horse behavior problems such as bucking, trailer loading, fearfulness, and groundwork issues. Through demonstrations, Lyons attempted to break down horse training concepts into step-by-step exercises that could be understood by inexperienced riders as well as professionals.

Author, Magazine Founder, and the Perfect Horse Brand

During the 1980s and 1990s, Lyons expanded his influence significantly through publishing and media. He authored numerous horse training books, including Lyons on Horses, Communicating With Cues, Bringing Up Baby, and John Lyons' The Making of a Perfect Horse. These books focused on groundwork, riding fundamentals, problem-solving, and horse behavior.

Lyons also founded John Lyons' Perfect Horse magazine, which became one of the more widely distributed horse training publications in the United States. The magazine featured training articles, horsemanship instruction, rider education, and horse care content designed for a broad horse-owning audience.

200+ Certified Trainers — and a Family Legacy Through Josh Lyons

Another major part of Lyons' career was the development of certification programs for horse trainers and instructors. Alongside his son Josh Lyons, Lyons helped establish a trainer certification system that expanded throughout the United States and internationally. The "John & Josh Lyons Certified" program produced more than 200 professional trainers in the United States and internationally.

Josh Lyons later became an important continuation of the Lyons horsemanship program. Published biographies note that Josh traveled with his father to clinics from a young age and eventually developed his own training and educational programs under the Lyons Legacy brand.

Lyons continued presenting clinics, expos, and educational events for decades while operating from Parachute, Colorado. His influence extended through books, magazines, instructional videos, certified trainers, television appearances, and horse expos throughout North America.
