Pat Parelli — Parelli Natural Horsemanship
Patrick Parelli was born in 1954 in Livermore, California. He grew up around horses and western riding in Northern California and began riding at an early age. Parelli became interested in rodeo and ranch horsemanship during his youth and later worked in a variety of horse-related jobs while developing his training skills.
As a young horseman, Parelli was influenced by several respected western horsemen. He has credited early mentors including Freddie Ferrera of Livermore and Troy Henry, and in 1983, at the California Livestock Symposium, he met Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, and Ronnie Willis — horsemen associated with the California vaquero and buckaroo traditions — who became major influences on his thinking. These influences became foundational to Parelli's later approach, which emphasized communication, timing, observation of horse behavior, and developing willingness rather than relying primarily on force-based methods.
During the 1970s and early 1980s, Parelli worked as a rodeo cowboy, ranch hand, and horse trainer. He competed in bronc riding and rodeo events before transitioning toward clinics and public horsemanship instruction. Over time, he developed a teaching system designed to simplify horse training concepts for recreational horse owners as well as competitive riders.

The Seven Games and a Global Educational System
Parelli eventually created what became known as Parelli Natural Horsemanship — a structured educational program centered on relationship-building, groundwork exercises, and progressive rider development. The system later became organized around the "Seven Games," a series of exercises intended to improve trust, responsiveness, and communication between horse and handler. According to Parelli educational materials, these exercises were designed to mirror natural patterns of communication observed among horses.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Parelli expanded his clinic schedule across the United States and internationally. His public demonstrations often featured work with unstarted or difficult horses before live audiences, helping establish him as one of the leading public figures associated with natural horsemanship during a period when interest in alternative horse training methods was growing rapidly.
A major turning point in Parelli's career came through expansion into educational media. Parelli Natural Horsemanship developed into a large international business that included books, home-study courses, DVDs, tack and training equipment, online instruction, instructor certification programs, and large-scale educational events. The organization established training campuses in Colorado and Florida while expanding internationally into Europe, Australia, and South America.
Books & Media
Published Author and Television Educator
Parelli authored and co-authored books and educational materials on horsemanship and horse behavior, including Natural Horse-Man-Ship (co-authored with his first wife, Karen) and the Parelli Natural Horsemanship Level 1 through Level 4 home-study materials. These publications focused on groundwork, rider psychology, horse behavior, communication, and progressive training exercises.
Throughout his career, Parelli remained one of the most recognized names connected to the broader natural horsemanship movement, which emphasized understanding horse behavior, communication, psychology, and reduced reliance on force-based training methods. His programs influenced large numbers of recreational horse owners and helped introduce groundwork-focused horsemanship concepts to mainstream horse audiences worldwide.
