Choosing a Trainer

How do you evaluate whether a trainer's methods align with your values and goals?

Alignment between your values and your trainer's methods is not a luxury — it is a practical necessity, because a training relationship where you are uncomfortable with what is being done to your horse is one that will eventually either damage your horse or damage your relationship with horses through the stress of the conflict. The clearest way to evaluate a trainer's methods is to watch them work — not in a demonstration arranged for your benefit, but in a regular working session with horses at various stages of training. What you observe tells you more than any philosophy statement or marketing material can. Does the trainer release pressure clearly and immediately when the horse tries? Do horses appear calm and willing or tense and compliant? Does the trainer respond to the individual horse's communication or follow a rigid program regardless of what the horse is showing? Ask directly about the trainer's philosophy in specific situations. What do they do when a horse bucks? When it refuses to load? When it is fearful of an obstacle? The answers reveal their actual approach rather than their stated approach, and you can assess whether that actual approach matches what you want for your horse. Consider whether the trainer can articulate why they do what they do. A trainer who can explain the reasoning behind their choices — who understands the principles of pressure and release, of timing and consistency, of reading the horse's responses — is likely to make good decisions in novel situations. A trainer who can only say they have always done it this way is more likely to apply a rigid method regardless of whether it fits the individual horse. Finally, trust your instincts. If something you observe makes you uncomfortable and you cannot get a satisfying explanation of why it was necessary, that discomfort is worth taking seriously.
