Choosing a Trainer

What are the differences between training board and regular board and what should you expect to pay for each?

Training board and regular board are fundamentally different services that are sometimes confused, and understanding the difference helps horse owners know what they are paying for and what to expect in return. Regular board — sometimes called full board or pasture board depending on what is included — is the cost of housing your horse. It covers stall or pasture space, feed, water, basic stall cleaning, and sometimes blanketing, fly spray, and turnout management. The horse is cared for daily but is not trained. The owner is responsible for arranging and paying for any training, lessons, or veterinary and farrier care separately. Training board is the cost of housing your horse at a trainer's facility while the trainer rides and works with the horse as part of their training program. The fee covers both the board costs and the trainer's time, and it typically includes a specified number of rides or training sessions per week — commonly four to five days per week in a professional training program. The cost difference reflects the value of the trainer's time and expertise. Regular board in most US markets ranges from a few hundred dollars per month for pasture board to over a thousand dollars for full stall board in premium facilities in high-cost areas. Training board typically adds the trainer's monthly fee on top of the board cost, which can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars per month depending on the trainer's level, the discipline, and the region. When evaluating training board costs, compare the number of rides included, the trainer's experience and competitive record, and the quality of the facility rather than simply choosing the lowest price. A trainer who charges more but rides five days a week and has a strong competitive background may deliver significantly more value than a less expensive option who rides three days a week with less documented expertise.
