How do you develop the reined or cow horse pattern work in Working Ranch Horse?

The reined or cow horse pattern work in Working Ranch Horse competition evaluates the horse's ability to perform controlled, correct maneuvers that demonstrate its responsiveness and athletic ability. Depending on the organization and format, this component may involve a traditional reining pattern with spins, stops, rollbacks, and circles, or a cow horse-style reined work that emphasizes the maneuvers most relevant to working cattle. The standard in Working Ranch Horse is functional correctness rather than the extreme athleticism of open reining or reined cow horse competition — stops should be willing and correct, spins should be balanced and cadenced, and rollbacks should be clean and forward. Developing these maneuvers requires the same foundational work described in reining training — breaking each maneuver into its components, developing correctness before speed, and building the horse's body through collection and suppleness exercises. The spin is developed through lateral flexion and shoulder control, with correct footfall and pivot established before speed is added. The stop is developed through correct body position, gradual increases in pace, and consistent reinforcement of willingness. Rollbacks are built through fence work and hip and shoulder control exercises. Because Working Ranch Horse horses must also perform cattle work in the same competition, the trainer must balance the time spent on reined pattern work with adequate development of the horse's cattle skills. A horse that is over-schooled on patterns at the expense of its cow work, or vice versa, will not be competitive in a format that rewards balanced development across both areas.
