Competition

How do you manage hauling and travel to keep a horse in good condition throughout a competition season?

Travel is a physical stressor that accumulates across a competition season, and managing it well is part of keeping a horse sound and competitive. Horses that haul frequently without adequate recovery time between events will gradually lose condition, become harder to settle at shows, and are at higher risk of respiratory illness due to the immune suppression that prolonged stress causes. Water intake during hauls is one of the most critical factors. Many horses drink significantly less during and after hauling, which creates dehydration and increases colic risk. Offering water frequently, carrying water from home if your horse is picky about unfamiliar water sources, and adding electrolytes are practical ways to support hydration on the road. Allow adequate rest time after a long haul before competing. A horse that steps off a trailer after many hours of travel and is expected to perform the same day is at a significant disadvantage physically and mentally. Where possible, arrive the day before and give the horse time to eat, move around, and settle. Monitor the horse's eating and manure production when away from home. A horse that goes off feed or stops passing manure normally at shows needs attention before the situation becomes a health problem. Keeping feeding as consistent as possible — same hay, same supplements, same timing — reduces the digestive disruption that travel causes. Build recovery days into a competition schedule rather than hauling from one show directly to the next with no downtime. Horses that are managed as athletes, with training, competition, and recovery balanced deliberately, hold up across a full season far better than those that are run continuously.
