What are the most common errors riders make in a show pen that they do not make at home?

The errors that appear in a show pen and not at home almost always trace back to the same root cause: the rider is riding differently under pressure. Show nerves produce physical changes — a tighter grip, a braced position, a shortened breath, an unconscious tendency to rush — and horses respond to all of those changes immediately. One of the most common errors is losing patience. A maneuver that the rider would school quietly and correctly at home gets pushed or hurried in the show pen because the pressure of performance creates urgency. The horse, feeling the change in the rider, becomes tense or resistant in ways it does not at home. Another common error is missing the setup. Pattern work at home is often practiced in a relaxed, methodical way that gives the horse time to prepare for each maneuver. In the show pen, riders skip the setup in an effort to look confident and efficient, and then wonder why the horse's departure, stop, or transition was not as clean as usual. Riders also tend to focus heavily on the maneuver they are currently performing to the exclusion of setting up the next one. Good pattern riding is always one step ahead — thinking about where you are going while executing where you are. The correction for all of these errors is the same: practice performing under self-created pressure at home. Invite people to watch. Set up mock competitions with a friend acting as a judge. Make the home environment require the same focus and composure that a show demands, so that composure becomes habitual rather than something you have to manufacture under pressure.
