The counter-canter is a canter on what would normally be considered the wrong lead for the direction of travel — cantering right lead while tracking left, for example. It is not a mistake but a deliberate gymnastic exercise that requires the horse to maintain balance, straightness, and rhythm without the natural support of being on the correct lead. Its training value is significant: it strengthens the horse's hindquarters, develops self-carriage, improves suppleness through the ribcage and loin, and teaches the horse to stay balanced without leaning on the inside rein for support. Horses that struggle with counter-canter are typically those that lack core strength or have learned to use the inside rein as a crutch for balance in corners. Regular counter-canter work exposes and addresses both issues. For horses being developed for flying changes, counter-canter is the essential preparation — a horse that cannot hold a quality counter-canter with relaxation and balance is not ready to learn flying changes. Counter-canter also tests and improves the rider's position, since any collapse through the hip or twist in the torso will immediately disrupt the horse's balance on the false lead.
