Dressage Lessons

Can adults with no riding experience start dressage lessons?

Adults with no riding experience can absolutely begin dressage lessons and often develop excellent dressage riders, because the qualities that dressage most values — body awareness, patience, systematic thinking, and the ability to feel subtle movement and respond to it — are qualities that develop across a lifetime rather than requiring childhood riding experience. Adult beginning riders frequently progress more quickly in understanding the concepts and principles of dressage than children because they bring the cognitive development and the ability to absorb and apply theoretical instruction that younger riders have not yet developed. The physical challenges of adult beginning riding — developing the balance and following seat that younger, more adaptable bodies develop more easily — are real but not insurmountable, and the specific fitness work that supports riding position can be actively pursued outside of lessons in ways that accelerate position development. The practical requirements for adult beginners are access to appropriate school horses — calm, experienced, forgiving horses that tolerate the position mistakes and uncertain aids of beginning riders — and a trainer who genuinely enjoys teaching adults from the beginning and who is patient with the pace of adult motor learning. Many adults who begin riding as complete novices find that they advance through the lower levels of dressage quite efficiently once the position fundamentals are established, because the systematic and intellectual nature of dressage suits the adult learner's strengths. The competitive world of dressage is explicitly age-inclusive, with adult amateur divisions at all competitive levels that allow non-professional riders to compete against others of similar experience rather than against professional trainers, and the USDF's Adult Amateur program specifically supports the development of riders who began the sport as adults.
