Dressage Lessons

Should I lunge my horse before a dressage lesson?

Whether to lunge your horse before a dressage lesson is a question worth discussing with your trainer rather than deciding unilaterally, because the answer depends on the specific horse's temperament and training, the conditions of the day, and what the trainer intends to do in the lesson itself. For horses that are genuinely difficult to handle when fresh — young horses, horses that have been stalled for several days, or horses that are particularly sensitive to weather or seasonal conditions — a brief lunge before the lesson can be valuable because it allows the horse to release excess energy and begin the process of mental and physical relaxation before the structured lesson demands begin. A horse that is too fresh or too reactive for the rider to manage effectively in a lesson is not in a state where productive learning can happen, and lunging to take the edge off is a legitimate preparation strategy in these situations. However, lunging for too long before a lesson can fatigue the horse before the lesson's gymnastic work begins, reducing the horse's physical capacity for productive training during the lesson itself. Many trainers prefer to begin lessons with the warm-up included, because observing how the horse transitions from fresh to working provides valuable diagnostic information about the horse's current state and training — information that is lost if the horse has already been worked on the lunge. Some trainers are also concerned about the quality of the horse's movement on the lunge being affected by the rider's position and aids, preferring to address any tension or freshness through the ridden warm-up rather than through lunging. The best approach is to ask your trainer specifically — before the first lesson or at a time when the question is relevant — so that your pre-lesson preparation aligns with the trainer's plan for the session.
