Dressage Lessons

What certifications should a dressage instructor have?

The primary certification system for dressage instructors in the United States is the USDF Instructor Certification Program, which evaluates and certifies instructors at specific competitive levels through a combination of written examination and observed teaching evaluation. The certification levels correspond to the competitive levels through which the certified instructor has demonstrated competency in teaching: certification through Training Level indicates the instructor has passed evaluations at the most basic level of dressage instruction; certification through Fourth Level indicates competency through the national levels; and FEI-level certification indicates competency in teaching the international competitive levels including Prix St. Georges, Intermediate, and Grand Prix. USDF certification is not required to teach dressage in the United States — anyone can legally call themselves a dressage instructor regardless of certification — which makes the certification a useful positive indicator without its absence being definitive evidence of incompetence. The USDF also has a program for Licensed Officials who are qualified to judge at specific competitive levels, and many trainers hold both instructor certification and judging licenses that together indicate substantial investment in formal education within the dressage community. International certifications including the German FN Bereiter qualification and the British Horse Society instructor certifications represent parallel systems in their respective countries and carry significant weight when held by trainers who have trained in European programs. Beyond formal certification, membership in the USDF and active participation in continuing education programs indicates a trainer's engagement with the professional development opportunities that the national organization provides, though again membership is not a guarantee of quality and its absence is not definitive evidence of inadequacy.
