Transitions are the primary gymnastic tool for developing impulsion because they systematically require the horse to engage its hindquarters in a way that ordinary forward work does not — each downward transition asks the horse to carry more weight on its hindquarters to decelerate, and if the horse is immediately ridden forward after the transition, the increased hindquarter activity carries over into the subsequent gait as greater impulsion. The classic instruction to ride many transitions is based on this direct cause-and-effect relationship: a horse ridden through twenty trot-to-walk-to-trot transitions in a twenty-minute session is asked to engage its hindquarters twenty times in a way that specifically develops the carrying power that impulsion requires, while a horse ridden in sustained trot for twenty minutes develops cardiovascular fitness but far less of the specific hindquarter engagement that impulsion training requires. Walk-to-trot and trot-to-walk transitions at lower levels, trot-to-canter and canter-to-trot at middle levels, and collected-to-medium-to-collected transitions within gaits at higher levels all develop impulsion through the same fundamental mechanism of requiring hindquarter engagement. The quality of the transition matters enormously: a transition in which the horse runs through or falls onto the forehand in the downward direction does not develop impulsion the way a transition in which the horse carries its weight actively on its hindquarters in the deceleration does. Half-transitions — momentary increases in collection within a gait rather than full gait changes — develop impulsion very efficiently because they create the same hindquarter engagement in a shorter timeframe than full transitions require, allowing many more repetitions within a training session. The combination of many transitions with immediate forward riding after each one creates a training pattern that systematically builds the carrying power of the hindquarters over months of consistent work.
