What temperament is ideal for dressage?

The ideal dressage temperament combines genuine willingness with sufficient sensitivity to respond to subtle aids, enough courage to approach new situations and exercises with confidence rather than anxiety, and the mental stability to work through the long, repetitive development process without becoming sour or resistant. A horse that is genuinely willing — that approaches its work with a cooperative, positive attitude rather than reluctance or defensiveness — learns more efficiently, develops training through a positive relationship rather than through managing resistance, and remains pleasant to work with across the many years of dressage development. Sensitivity is valuable because the light, subtle aids of advanced dressage can only be felt and responded to by a horse that is genuinely sensitive to the rider's body; a horse that requires strong aids to produce any response will not develop the lightness and refinement that the upper levels require. However, excessive sensitivity — hypersensitivity or extreme reactivity — creates management challenges that can prevent the consistent, focused training that dressage development requires. The mental stability to work consistently through years of systematic gymnastic development is perhaps the most underrated temperament quality in dressage horses: a horse that learns new concepts readily and retains them between training sessions, that can work in varied environments without becoming distracted or anxious, and that maintains its cooperative attitude through repetitive gymnastic work without becoming bored or resistant is a horse that will develop efficiently regardless of whether its initial gait quality is exceptional. Horses that show a genuine interest in their environment and in their relationship with their rider — curiosity rather than anxiety, engagement rather than resignation — tend to be the most rewarding long-term dressage partners even when their initial physical qualities are modest.
