What is a full cheek snaffle and how does it help with steering young horses?

The full cheek snaffle features long, straight extensions above and below the ring on each side of the mouthpiece — cheek pieces that extend vertically beyond the bit ring itself. These cheeks serve a specific and practical function that makes the full cheek one of the most useful bits for horses in the early stages of steering and directional training, particularly in disciplines where two-handed direct rein work is used to establish lateral bend and turning responses. When a rein aid is applied, the upper cheek of the full cheek snaffle presses against the outside of the horse's face on the turning side, creating lateral pressure that reinforces the direct rein in the horse's mouth. Essentially the bit communicates turning from two points simultaneously — inside the mouth through normal snaffle action and against the outside of the face through the cheek. This dual pressure makes directional cues clearer and more definitive for horses that are still learning to respond to rein pressure, reducing the degree of confusion that can occur when a horse does not yet understand what turning from rein pressure means. The cheeks also prevent the bit from being pulled sideways through the horse's mouth when strong lateral pressure is applied, which is a problem that can occur with ring snaffles on horses that lean heavily into one rein. By anchoring the bit against the cheek, the full cheek keeps the mouthpiece centered and the pressure correct regardless of the degree of rein pressure used. Full cheek snaffles are typically used with bit hobbles or keepers — small loops that attach the upper cheek to the cheekpiece of the headstall — to keep the cheeks upright and in correct position. Without keepers the cheeks can rotate and catch on the headstall, which reduces their effectiveness and creates a potential safety hazard. This bit is an excellent training tool for the early months of snaffle work and is widely used in dressage, western performance, and starting programs across all disciplines.
