How do misting systems benefit horses and how should they be installed?

Misting systems installed in horse barns and stabling areas provide evaporative cooling that can meaningfully reduce the ambient temperature in hot weather, making the environment significantly more comfortable for both horses and the people working with them. The systems work by forcing water through fine nozzles that atomize it into tiny droplets, which then evaporate into the air and absorb heat in the process — the same physical principle that makes sweat an effective cooling mechanism. The effectiveness of misting systems depends significantly on the ambient humidity of the environment where they are installed. In low-humidity climates like those found in the arid west and southwest, misting systems are highly effective because the dry air readily absorbs the atomized water and evaporation happens rapidly. In high-humidity climates where the air is already near saturation, misting systems are much less effective because the saturated air cannot absorb additional moisture efficiently, and the droplets tend to wet surfaces and horses without producing meaningful cooling. Installation considerations include the placement of the nozzle lines — typically along the ceiling or upper walls of the barn aisle — the water pressure required to produce fine atomization, and the drainage management for water that does not evaporate. Misting systems that produce large droplets rather than fine mist create wet conditions rather than evaporative cooling and should be adjusted or replaced with appropriate nozzles. Water quality matters for misting system longevity because minerals in hard water accumulate in the nozzles over time and eventually clog them. Regular nozzle cleaning or the use of filtered water extends the system's effective life.
