The systems work by forcing water through fine nozzles that atomize it into tiny droplets, which then evaporate into the air and absorb heat in the process — the same physical principle that makes sweat an effective cooling mechanism. The effectiveness of misting systems depends significantly on the ambient humidity of the environment where they are installed. In low-humidity climates like those found in the arid west and southwest, misting systems are highly effective because the dry air readily absorbs the atomized water and evaporation happens rapidly. In high-humidity climates where the air is already near saturation, misting systems are much less effective because the saturated air cannot absorb additional moisture efficiently, and the droplets tend to wet surfaces and horses without producing meaningful cooling.
