How do I train a horse to pick up the correct lead every time?

Consistent lead departures are a mark of a well-trained horse and a confident rider, and they are achievable through clear communication, correct body position, and an understanding of what the horse needs from you in the moment of departure. Many lead problems that look like training issues are actually rider position issues, and distinguishing between the two saves a great deal of time. The lope departure is a coordinated movement that begins in the hindquarters. To pick up the left lead, the horse's right hind leg initiates the sequence, which means the horse needs to be set up so that leg is engaged and ready to push off. You help create that setup by positioning the horse's body slightly to the inside — a slight flex at the poll toward the direction of travel, with the hindquarters positioned just a touch to the outside. This places the outside hind in the correct position to initiate the lead. The cue itself should be consistent every time: inside leg at the girth driving forward, outside leg slightly behind the girth to hold the hindquarters in position, and a light opening of the inside rein to invite the departure. The timing of when you apply the cue matters — asking as the outside hind is about to leave the ground gives the horse the best mechanical opportunity to respond correctly. If a horse consistently picks up the wrong lead, examine your body position first. A rider who collapses to the inside, looks down, or shifts their weight at the moment of departure can inadvertently push the horse onto the wrong lead. Video from the ground is invaluable here because the rider rarely feels what they are doing in the brief moment of departure. Horses that struggle with a specific lead often have a physical component — stiffness, soreness, or asymmetry in the body that makes one lead more difficult than the other. If retraining the departure does not resolve consistent wrong leads, a lameness evaluation is time well spent.
