Hunter Jumper

What is a one-stride gymnastic and how is it used in hunter jumper training?

A one-stride gymnastic is an exercise in which two fences are placed approximately eighteen to twenty-two feet apart — one canter stride between them — creating a sequence that the horse must navigate by landing from the first fence, taking one canter stride, and immediately jumping the second fence. The one-stride distance is short enough that the horse has minimal time to adjust its balance or assess the second fence between elements, placing the primary responsibility on the quality of the horse's technique and the rider's approach rather than on last-second adjustments within the combination. One-stride gymnastics develop the horse's adjustability and technique by placing it repeatedly in the situation that competition combinations create, building the physical memory and confidence that makes competition combinations more manageable. For horses that rush in combinations or that tend to flatten their jumping arc over the second fence of a combination, the gymnastic context of a one-stride exercise allows the trainer to address these specific issues through repetition in a controlled setting where the height can be managed and the distance is predetermined. For riders, one-stride gymnastics develop the ability to remain in a balanced following position through a combination without interfering with the horse between elements — the most common error in one-stride combinations is that the rider lands from the first element and attempts to reorganize the canter before the second element, which in a true one-stride combination simply interferes with the horse's natural stride rather than improving the approach. The one-stride gymnastic teaches both horse and rider that the quality of the approach to the first element determines the quality of the combination — if the horse arrives at the first element in balance and with appropriate pace, the one stride will produce a comfortable takeoff at the second.
