Lead Changes

How do you school a horse that has developed a habit of swapping leads spontaneously at the lope?

A horse that swaps leads spontaneously — that changes from the requested lead to the other lead without being asked — is either seeking comfort by escaping an uncomfortable lead or has been allowed to swap without consequence often enough that swapping has become a habit. Addressing this requires distinguishing between the two causes. If the spontaneous swapping is comfort-seeking — the horse consistently swaps in specific directions, at specific corners, or always from the same lead to the other — Clinton Anderson investigates whether there is a physical reason the horse is avoiding the lead it keeps swapping off of. Asymmetrical muscle development, hock discomfort, or stifle issues can make one lead significantly more uncomfortable than the other, and a horse that is swapping to escape discomfort needs the physical cause addressed before any training correction will hold. For the habit-based swapper, Anderson's correction is to maintain the lead through the swap rather than allowing the horse to complete it. The moment the horse begins to swap, the rider picks up one rein — typically on the side of the original lead — and brings the horse's nose back in the direction that confirms the original lead. This mid-swap correction is more precise than any correction applied after the swap is completed, because it addresses the swap before the horse has received the relief of the new lead. The correction must be consistent every single time the horse swaps without being asked. A horse that is sometimes allowed to swap and sometimes corrected learns that swapping is sometimes acceptable, which is the worst possible training environment for eliminating the habit. Consistent enforcement — every swap is corrected immediately and the original lead is confirmed before any release — teaches the horse that swapping spontaneously leads only to more work.
