Lead Changes

How do you use poles on the ground to help teach and confirm lead changes?

Ground poles are an underused training tool for lead change development that provide both physical guidance for the horse and clear placement markers for the rider. They are particularly useful for horses that are learning where to change, that change inconsistently, or that need a physical prompt to help them understand the moment of the change. A basic pole setup for lead change training involves placing two poles parallel to each other with approximately eight to twelve feet between them — enough for the horse to canter over each pole in sequence. The horse lopes over the first pole on one lead, lopes through the gap between the poles, and ideally changes leads before or over the second pole. The poles create a natural transition point that prompts many horses to offer a change spontaneously, which gives the rider the opportunity to confirm the change with a release rather than needing to ask for it through pressure. For horses that are changing inconsistently — sometimes changing correctly and sometimes not — poles can be placed at specific intervals across the training area to create multiple change opportunities in a single session. Working through a series of poles at consistent intervals develops the horse's pattern recognition for where changes occur without the rider needing to give visible aids at each change, which develops the quiet, subtle change that competition requires. Clinton Anderson uses ground poles extensively in his training for the practical reason that horses learn well from situations where they can discover the correct answer rather than being directed to it. A horse that finds the lead change on its own over a pole and gets a release has understood the exercise differently than one that was directed to change by strong rein and leg aids at the same moment.
