Lead Changes

What role does the figure eight play in lead change training and how do you ride it correctly?

The figure eight is the foundational lead change exercise in virtually every western and English training system because it creates the conditions for the lead change naturally — a change of direction that invites a change of lead — and allows both horse and rider to practice the timing, aids, and feel of the change in a repeatable, structured context. A correct figure eight for lead change training is two large circles — typically fifty to sixty feet in diameter in a round pen or sixty to ninety feet in an open arena — connected at a center point. The size of the circles matters: too small and the horse is mechanically unable to execute a balanced lead change because the turn radius is too tight; too large and the center crossing point lacks enough directional change to prompt the natural invitation to change. Riding the figure eight correctly means maintaining a consistent pace and quality of lope throughout both circles and approaching the center crossing point in a straight line — not cutting across the circles or drifting into the center early. The change request is made as the horse crosses the center and the direction changes, not before and not after. Many riders make the error of asking too early — as the circle approaches the center — which prompts the horse to change in the curved part of the circle rather than at the center crossing. Clinton Anderson rides many repetitions of the figure eight before asking for any changes — establishing the pattern of the exercise, confirming the horse's balance on each circle, and building the rhythm of the crossing before adding the change request. He notes that horses ridden through many quiet figure eights before changes are introduced sometimes begin offering changes spontaneously at the center — which he welcomes as evidence that the horse has understood the context of the exercise.
