How do you know when a colt is genuinely ready for its first ride?

Knowing when a colt is genuinely ready for its first ride requires reading specific behavioral and physical indicators that together indicate the colt's preparation is authentic rather than superficial — and the distinction between genuine readiness and apparent readiness is precisely what determines whether the first ride is a manageable, positive continuation of established communication or a dangerous confrontation with a colt whose preparation was less complete than it appeared. The most important physical readiness indicators include: the colt accepting the saddle placement and girth tightening without significant defensive response — a soft acceptance rather than a braced tolerance; the colt standing quietly and without significant tension while the rider places extensive weight in the stirrup from both sides; and the colt accepting the rider lying across the saddle without attempting to leave, with the body remaining soft and the feet quiet rather than dancing and preparing for flight. The most important mental readiness indicators include: the colt's attention being genuinely on the trainer rather than fixed on the environment in active threat assessment; the colt yielding promptly and softly to lead rope direction under the additional stimulation of the tacked-up state; and the colt showing the engaged, curious quality of an animal in a learning-capable state rather than the fixed or glazed quality of an animal that is managing through suppression. Buck Brannaman describes looking for the colt that is genuinely with the trainer — whose thought is engaged and attentive — as the primary readiness indicator, because a colt whose thought is genuinely with the trainer will transfer that attentiveness to a rider in a way that a colt whose thought was never genuinely engaged will not.
