How does groundwork prepare a horse for under-saddle work?

Quality groundwork prepares a horse for under-saddle work by installing the specific communication responses, physical suppleness, and mental engagement that riding requires in an environment where the horse can learn these things without the simultaneous challenge of carrying a rider. The most direct preparation is the installation of yield-to-pressure responses — the horse learning that specific pressures from the halter and lead rope mean yield in specific directions — because these same concepts translate directly to rein and leg communication under saddle. A horse that has genuinely learned to yield its hindquarters to pressure from behind the drive line understands the concept that will govern the response to leg pressure behind the girth when ridden; a horse that has learned to soften its jaw and poll to halter pressure understands the concept that will govern the response to rein pressure through the bridle. The physical development that groundwork produces also directly benefits the riding: yielding exercises develop lateral suppleness that makes the horse more responsive and comfortable to ride, driving and forward exercises develop the impulsion and willingness that makes the horse forward and light under saddle, and the back-up develops the hindquarter engagement that supports collection. The mental preparation that groundwork provides may be its most important contribution to under-saddle readiness: a horse that has learned through groundwork that the trainer's communication is comprehensible, that pressure has a clear meaning and produces a genuine release when the correct response is offered, and that the training relationship is safe and fair is in a fundamentally different mental state for its first rides than a horse that encounters pressure, release, and training demands for the first time from the saddle. Tom Dorrance's insistence that the horse needed to be mentally ready for each stage of training — not just behaviorally compliant — describes exactly what quality groundwork develops and what its absence fails to provide.
