Releasing too late is the most universal mistake and the one with the most significant consequences — a release that comes one or two seconds after the correct response teaches whatever behavior was happening in those seconds rather than the intended response, inadvertently training the wrong behavior with the same thoroughness that correct timing would have trained the right one. Releasing too slowly — reducing pressure gradually rather than removing it completely — fails to create the clear contrast between pressure and release that the horse's nervous system needs to register the release as a genuine reward rather than a continuation of pressure at a lower level. Applying excessive pressure immediately rather than starting light and escalating only as needed trains the horse to wait for strong pressure before responding, producing the unresponsive horse that requires increasingly strong aids over time.
