Parelli Natural Horsemanship is a structured educational program built around the premise that natural horsemanship principles — working with the horse's nature through communication, psychology, and relationship rather than through force — can be taught systematically to any rider willing to invest the time and follow the program's developmental pathway. The program is organized around several interconnected frameworks that together provide a comprehensive approach to the horse-human relationship. The Seven Games form the foundational groundwork curriculum, providing specific exercises through which the horse develops responsiveness, confidence, and communication with the handler. The four savvys — On Line, Liberty, FreeStyle, and Finesse — describe the four primary contexts in which horse-human partnership is developed, from haltered groundwork through liberty work to riding in various states of connection and refinement. The Parelli Levels program provides a progression of assessment and achievement — traditionally organized around colored string levels from one through four and beyond — that allows students to measure their development and work toward specific competency milestones. Supporting these core frameworks is an extensive library of home study materials — DVDs, books, online content — that allows students to learn between clinic and instructor sessions, which was a significant innovation when home study materials were first developed in the 1980s and 1990s. The program's structure was both its greatest innovation and a source of criticism from practitioners in other traditions who felt that the systematization missed the organic, feel-based quality that Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt had identified as the heart of genuine horsemanship.
