What is the Parelli levels program?

The Parelli Levels program is the progression and assessment framework that gives students in the Parelli Natural Horsemanship system a structured developmental pathway with measurable milestones — providing the clear sense of direction and achievement that the more organic, feel-based approaches of the Dorrance-Hunt tradition deliberately avoided. The levels system was originally organized around colored strings — the Savvy String — that students earned by demonstrating specific competencies, with the progression from Level 1 through Level 4 representing a developmental arc from basic horse handling safety through advanced partnership skills. Each level in all four savvys — On Line, Liberty, FreeStyle, and Finesse — has specific tasks and demonstrations that define competency, allowing students to identify precisely what they need to develop and to verify their progress through assessment by qualified Parelli instructors. The level progression was designed to ensure that students developed genuine foundation skills in each savvy before advancing, rather than progressing to mounted work before groundwork and basic communication were genuinely established. The levels framework was innovative for equestrian education because it provided the kind of structured, self-assessable developmental pathway that sports and martial arts had long used but that horsemanship had not previously offered in a systematic form accessible to recreational riders. Criticisms of the levels system have included concerns that students can pass levels by memorizing specific tasks without developing the genuine feel and sensitivity that the tasks are meant to develop, and that the external achievement focus of the levels system can distract from the internal development of feel that the Dorrance-Hunt tradition considers the primary goal.
