Natural Horsemanship

Who is Pat Parelli?

Pat Parelli is a California-born horseman who built the most systematized and commercially successful natural horsemanship program in the world, reaching an audience of recreational riders that no previous natural horsemanship practitioner had approached in scale. Parelli grew up around horses and developed his early horsemanship through exposure to trainers including Troy Henry and Ronnie Willis, who had connections to the Tom Dorrance lineage, before developing his own approach that synthesized these influences with his background in showmanship and his gift for making complex ideas accessible to people without deep horse experience. He began teaching clinics in the 1980s and developed his Parelli Natural Horsemanship program — a structured system of games, levels, and savvys — that provided a clear developmental pathway for riders who wanted to improve their relationship with their horses but needed more structure and achievable milestones than the Dorrance-Hunt tradition's more organic approach provided. His partnership with his wife Linda Parelli, who brought her own horsemanship background and teaching skill to the program, significantly expanded its reach and depth. The Parelli program grew through home study materials, licensed instructors, training centers, and eventually a substantial online presence into one of the largest equestrian education programs in the world, reaching practitioners across disciplines, countries, and experience levels who were drawn to the promise of a better relationship with their horses through natural horsemanship principles made learnable step by step. Parelli's influence on how recreational riders worldwide think about groundwork, horse psychology, and the horse-human relationship has been enormous even among riders who have never directly engaged with his specific program.
