Reining

How do I recover if I make a mistake in a reining pattern?

Recovering from a mistake in a reining pattern is both a mental skill and a tactical one, and the rider who can manage both dimensions effectively minimizes the damage from the error and gives the remaining pattern the best possible chance of scoring well. The mental component is the more immediately critical one: a rider who dwells on the mistake while riding the next maneuver will compromise that maneuver's quality and potentially create a cascade where one error becomes two or three. The correct mental response to a mistake in the show pen is to acknowledge it internally without judgment — a missed lead change, a stop that was too short, a spin that went past the required count — note it, and immediately return full attention to the next element of the pattern. The run is not over because of one mistake, and the maneuvers remaining after the error can still score well if the rider rides them with full presence rather than processing the mistake while they are happening. The tactical component involves knowing what to do immediately after the specific type of mistake that occurred. After an over-spin or under-spin, continue immediately to the next element rather than stopping to debate the count. After a late lead change, continue on the new lead into the required maneuver rather than attempting to re-do the change. After a missed rollback, depart on the correct lead and continue — the penalty has already been incurred and stopping makes it worse. In general, the correct tactical response to any mistake in the show pen is to continue forward, complete the remaining pattern elements as well as possible, and accept the scoring consequence of the error rather than compounding it through indecision, correction attempts, or visible frustration that costs additional credit from the judge.
