Should my trainer school my horse before I show?

Whether a trainer should school a horse before the owner shows it at a competition depends on the specific horse, the owner's skill level, the trainer's assessment of the horse's current state, and the rules of the class being entered regarding trainer assistance. For some horses — particularly those that are fresh, anxious in new environments, or that benefit from a professional tune-up before the amateur rides — having the trainer get on and establish a baseline of softness and responsiveness before the non-pro class can make a significant difference in how the horse goes for its owner. The trainer's experienced timing and feel can settle a horse that is elevated from the show environment in a way that the owner's less experienced riding might not accomplish as efficiently. For other horses — particularly quiet, experienced ones that settle easily in new environments — trainer schooling before the class may not be necessary and could actually be counterproductive if the trainer's session takes the edge off the horse in a way that leaves it flat for the owner's run. The class rules matter as well: some classes have specific rules about trainer assistance or trainer riding before the non-pro class that need to be understood before making the decision. When trainer pre-schooling is appropriate, it should be brief and purposeful — establishing softness and confirming basic responses rather than drilling maneuvers — so that the horse arrives at the non-pro's warm-up in a settled, working state without being exhausted or drilled flat. The trainer who knows both the horse and the owner is the best person to determine whether pre-schooling will help in a specific situation.
