Reining

What is a plus maneuver in reining?

A plus maneuver in reining is one that scores above the base score of zero, indicating that the maneuver was performed at a level above average in correctness, style, difficulty, or control. The scoring system awards half-point and full-point increments above and below zero for each maneuver, and a plus score indicates the judge evaluated that specific maneuver as better than a correct, average execution of the required movement. A plus stop might show exceptional depth, straightness, and willingness — the horse sliding powerfully, staying flat through the back, and remaining completely soft in the face. A plus spin demonstrates both correctness and speed, the pivot foot anchored and the front end moving with cadence and rhythm at a pace that shows genuine athleticism and training depth. A plus lead change is clean front and back simultaneously, straight through the transition, smooth without any jump or speed change, and clearly responsive to the rider's cue. A plus large fast circle shows obvious speed, correct shape, and a horse that is clearly guided rather than running on its own. The important distinction is that a plus score is not awarded for dramatic or flashy execution alone — a stop that slides far but is crooked or braced, a spin that is fast but loses the pivot foot, or a circle that is fast but shows the rider managing the horse rather than guiding it will not earn a plus regardless of the visual impression of athleticism. Plus scores require the combination of correctness and quality that indicates the horse is performing at a level above what average training produces, and they are most consistently earned by horses whose foundational training depth is visible in the smoothness and willingness of every maneuver rather than only in the most spectacular ones.
