Why does my horse change in front but not behind in the lead change?

A horse that changes its front lead but not its hind lead — commonly called a late change behind or a cross-canter — is one of the most frequently encountered lead change problems and almost always indicates that the horse is crooked through the change, not moving its hindquarters correctly in response to the rider's leg, lacking the physical strength and balance behind to change cleanly, or experiencing discomfort that makes changing the hind lead difficult or uncomfortable. Each of these causes requires a different primary correction, which is why identifying the specific source matters before adding training pressure. Crookedness is the most common cause: a horse that drifts sideways or swings its hindquarters out of alignment during the change separates its front and hind ends enough that the front can change independently before the hind follows. Rebuilding straightness through the change — riding the horse firmly between both legs and keeping the hindquarters aligned behind the shoulders through the transition — is the primary training correction. Poor hip response is closely related: the flying change asks the rider to shift the horse's hindquarters with a specific leg cue at the moment of the change, and a horse that does not respond clearly to that leg cue will not move the hind end into the new lead correctly. Hip control exercises at the lope — moving the hindquarters slightly left and right from leg pressure while maintaining forward movement — build the specific response the change requires. Physical weakness behind or hock and stifle soreness should always be considered when a horse is consistently late behind, particularly if counter-canter work is also difficult or if the horse swaps leads involuntarily in the circles. Soundness evaluation before training pressure addresses the possibility that the late change is a pain response rather than a training gap.
