Why does my horse get stuck in the rollback?

A horse that gets stuck in the rollback — pausing, hesitating, or requiring strong encouragement before departing after the turn — is lacking the forward energy, confidence, or physical ability to flow from the turn directly into the lope departure, and the cause determines whether the fix is a training correction, a confidence-building exercise, or a physical evaluation. Lack of forward energy is the most straightforward cause: a horse that is behind the rider's leg generally and does not respond off a light forward cue will get stuck in the rollback because the departure requires a willing, immediate response to a subtle forward aid at a moment when the horse is physically compressed from the stop and turn. Re-establishing a sharp forward response to a light leg in flat work before returning to rollbacks addresses this directly. Being blocked by the rider's hand is a significant contributor that many riders do not recognize — holding too much rein contact at the moment of the departure prevents the horse from driving forward freely, creating the stuck feeling when the actual cause is the rider's hand rather than the horse's reluctance. Release the rein contact completely at the moment of the departure cue and allow the horse to move forward freely rather than asking the horse to go while holding it back simultaneously. Confusion about what is being asked produces sticking in horses that have not been taught the rollback as a clear, confirmed sequence — they stop and turn willingly but are uncertain whether and when to depart. Teaching the rollback in clear steps, rewarding each element specifically, and building the departure cue as a distinct signal gives the horse the understanding it needs to commit to the departure. Physical weakness through the hindquarters can also produce sticking, as the departure from a rolled-back position demands significant push from the hind end that an underdeveloped or sore horse may not offer willingly.
