Steer Wrestling

What is the correct hand and arm position when wrestling the steer to the ground?

When you make contact with the steer, your right arm hooks around and under the right horn with your elbow driving down toward your hip, while your left hand grabs the nose or left horn for leverage. The mechanics require that you get your feet planted and driving before you attempt to turn the steer's head — trying to muscle a steer over without foot position results in a steer dragging you rather than the other way around. Drive your right hip into the steer's neck and use your body weight as the primary lever, not arm strength alone. The left hand tilts the nose up and to the right, which breaks the steer's forward momentum and initiates the fall. A common mistake is grabbing too high on the horns, which gives you no mechanical advantage. Get your right arm as deep under the right horn as possible — horn to elbow, not horn to wrist. Once the steer begins to go over, drive your right shoulder forward and guide the fall so the steer lands clean on its side rather than bouncing up. Strength matters less than technique at this stage; a properly positioned lighter wrestler will consistently beat a stronger one who relies on brute force.
