What are the keys to a heeler developing a consistent heel catch?

Consistent heel catching is what separates a competitive heeler from one who is always chasing times. The heel loop must be delivered at precisely the right moment, in precisely the right location, with a swing that has been grooved through thousands of repetitions until the mechanics are automatic. When those mechanics are automatic, the heeler can focus entirely on reading the steer and timing the delivery rather than thinking about the physical act of throwing. The foundation of heel catching is the swing. The loop should be open, flat, and rotating at a consistent speed before the heeler ever reaches their delivery point. A loop that is too large drifts and is hard to control; a loop that is too small does not give the heeler enough margin for error at the moment of the throw. Most experienced heelers find a loop size and swing speed that they use consistently across all conditions, and they develop that through ground practice on a dummy before ever taking it to a live steer. Position behind the steer determines the angle and timing of the delivery. The heeler should be behind the steer with a clear view of both hind legs as the header makes its turn. Coming in from too far off to the side makes it difficult to get the loop under both heels; being too close eliminates the dwell time needed for the steer's feet to step into the loop. That optimal position is something each heeler calibrates to their own horse and throwing style through repetition. The delivery itself happens as the steer's hind legs are in the air, which means the loop must arrive at ground level in time for the feet to step down into it. Throwing too early leaves the loop on the ground before the feet arrive; throwing too late means the feet have already hit the ground. The fraction of a second between those two errors is where the heel catch lives, and developing the feel for it is the lifetime work of every heeler in the sport.
