Team Roping

What mental qualities does a good rope horse need?

The mental qualities that define a good rope horse are consistency, recover-ability, and focus — and of the three, consistency is the most valuable because it is the one the roper depends on most completely during a competitive run. A horse that performs the same way in practice and in competition, on the first run of the day and the last, at a small jackpot and at a major event, is a horse its roper can build a consistent competitive strategy around. A horse that is brilliant occasionally and unpredictable otherwise costs the roper more in management and uncertainty than it gains in peak performance. Recover-ability is the mental quality that determines how quickly a horse returns to its working baseline after something goes wrong — a missed catch, an unusual cattle behavior, a bad run, a startling sound from the crowd. The horse that shakes off disruptions and returns to its normal state within a stride or two is far more useful in competition than one that carries tension or anxiety from one run into the next. Focus is the horse's ability to stay oriented toward its job — the cattle, the run, the rider's cues — rather than being distracted by the environment, the crowd, or other horses. Focus is partly temperament and partly training: a horse that has been worked in varied environments with the expectation that it pays attention to the job regardless of surroundings develops a working focus that holds up where an untested horse's attention wanders. Courage also belongs on this list — the rope horse that closes confidently on cattle, stops hard without hesitation, and holds its dally under load without flinching is a horse whose mental confidence in the job matches its physical training.
