Training Principles

How do you introduce a young horse to the saddle pad and saddle for the first time?

Introducing a young horse to the saddle pad and saddle is a significant milestone in its training and one that requires the same patient, progressive desensitization approach used for all earlier equipment introductions. The horse should be comfortable with the handler's touch across its entire back, sides, and girth area before any equipment is introduced, because the saddle affects all of those areas simultaneously and a horse that is sensitive in any of them will react to the saddle more dramatically. The saddle pad is introduced first by allowing the horse to investigate it, then placing it gently on the horse's neck and sliding it back onto the back while watching for tension or resistance. The pad should stay on the horse's back for a period while the horse is handled and asked to move, so it becomes familiar with the feel and movement of an object on its back. Once the pad is accepted without reaction, the saddle is introduced by first showing it to the horse, then placing it gently on the back without the cinch attached. The weight and feel of the saddle is different from the pad alone, and some horses react to it even after accepting the pad without difficulty. The cinch is introduced after the saddle is accepted, beginning with a very light contact and gradually snugging it over multiple sessions rather than cinching it tight in the first introduction. A horse that is cinched tightly before it has been desensitized to girth pressure will often buck or react strongly, creating a dangerous situation and a negative association with saddling that can persist for years.
