Vaulting

How do I teach a horse to lunge consistently for vaulting?

Training a vaulting lunge horse begins with establishing an absolutely reliable, rhythmic, consistent canter on the circle before any vaulter ever mounts. The horse must be able to maintain the same tempo, outline, and circle size with minimal input from the lunger for extended periods.

The foundation is developed through progressive lunge work that prioritizes rhythm above all else. The horse learns to accept the lunge line contact, maintain bend to the inside, and carry itself in a consistent tempo. Transitions on the lunge should be smooth and responsive to voice commands, and the horse should be able to extend and collect within the canter while maintaining balance.

The introduction to weight on the back begins with light vaulting rollers and surcingles, then progresses to a stationary vaulter on the barrel position, then to simple mounts and dismounts at the walk. The horse is desensitized progressively to the unpredictable nature of vaulting weight shifts so that each new sensation is introduced incrementally and the horse builds confidence rather than tension.
