Weanling Handling

How do you safely load a weanling into a trailer for the first time?

Loading a weanling into a trailer for the first time is an exercise that should be treated as a pure training opportunity rather than a transportation necessity — meaning it should happen for the first time when there is no time pressure, no destination waiting, and no stress attached to whether the foal loads today or not. The best first trailer loading experiences happen on a quiet afternoon when the handler has unlimited patience and the only goal is to have the foal step into the trailer voluntarily and feel good about it.

Begin by allowing the foal to investigate the trailer from outside. Park the trailer in a familiar area, open the doors or slant, and let the foal sniff the ramp or step-in, look inside, and habituate to the appearance and smell before any loading pressure is applied. A weanling that is curious and relaxed about the trailer exterior is much closer to loading than one that is anxious and avoidant.

Leading the foal to the trailer and applying forward pressure toward the opening — releasing every time the foal takes a step toward the trailer — is the same pressure-and-release approach used in all other leading work. Reward every try: if the foal sniffs the ramp, release. If it puts one foot on the ramp, release. If it steps in halfway, release completely and let it stand. Build the full load progressively over several approach-and-try sequences rather than trying to push all the way in on the first attempt.

Having a calm, experienced older horse already loaded in the trailer dramatically reduces the time required for a weanling's first load — the social draw of another horse inside the trailer is often more effective than any amount of handler pressure alone. Once the foal is loading willingly, practice loading and unloading ten to fifteen times in a single session so the behavior becomes thoroughly confirmed before any actual travel.
