Working Western Rail

What are the most common faults judges penalize in working western rail and how do you avoid them?

The faults most commonly penalized in working western rail fall into two categories: movement faults that indicate training deficiencies and management faults that indicate the rider is working too hard to maintain the horse. The most penalized movement fault is an incorrect rhythm or gait impurity. At the jog, this means a tendency toward a lateral or pacey rhythm — the horse moving its two left legs closer together in time than its two right legs, producing a swinging rather than diagonal two-beat. At the lope, it means a four-beat lope where the diagonal pair splits, indicating loss of collection and correct footfall sequence. At the walk, any tendency toward an amble or pace is severely penalized. Speed faults are common in both directions. A horse that jogs or lopes too fast is moving outside the natural, comfortable pace the class rewards. A horse that moves too slowly appears dull, behind the leg, and as though the rider is holding it back — which fails the forward movement standard. Finding and maintaining the correct middle speed is a training challenge that takes time to confirm. Breaking gait — dropping from lope to jog or jog to walk without being asked — is penalized significantly and is usually evidence that the horse has not been confirmed in maintaining its gait independently. The horse that breaks when another horse passes it, or when it reaches the end of the arena, or when the rider's attention wanders for a moment, is not confirmed enough for competition. Management faults include a rider who is visibly posting at the jog when sitting is expected, a rider whose legs are constantly active to maintain pace, a horse that is visibly behind a tight rein, and a horse with excessive head and neck movement that suggests tension rather than natural carriage. All of these reduce the picture of effortless, natural movement that working western rail rewards.
