Yearling Groundwork

How do you introduce a yearling to the saddle pad and saddle for the first time?

Introducing a yearling to the saddle pad and saddle for the first time is a desensitization exercise that should be treated with the same systematic patience as any other novel stimulus introduction — moving at the horse's speed, rewarding relaxation, and building genuine confidence rather than forced tolerance. Done correctly, this preparation makes saddling a completely routine experience before the horse is ever asked to carry a rider.

The saddle pad is introduced first. Begin by allowing the yearling to sniff it, then rub it gently on the neck and shoulder while the horse is standing tied or held. Move progressively to rubbing it along the back, sides, and hindquarters — areas that some horses find more sensitive. Once the horse accepts the pad being rubbed across its body without significant tension, drape it over the back and allow it to rest there. Reward the horse for standing still with the pad on its back.

Once the pad is accepted, a light surcingle or a bareback pad with a girth can be introduced — the girth being the component most likely to produce a reaction. Introduce the girth by allowing the horse to feel it against its barrel without any pressure first, then attach it loosely and allow the horse to walk with the surcingle on before tightening progressively. The first time a horse feels girth pressure around its barrel is the moment most likely to produce a buck or bolt, and managing that moment through gradual introduction rather than rapid tightening is the key to a safe outcome.

An actual saddle follows the same progression. Many trainers delay introducing the saddle itself until the two-year-old year, using a surcingle and saddle pad during the yearling year to complete the desensitization to girth pressure without the weight and shape of a full saddle.
