The movement asks the horse to travel on three tracks — the outside hind following the outside front, the inside hind stepping into the track left by the outside front, and the inside front crossing slightly to the inside — while maintaining forward movement and a slight bend through the body toward the inside. What makes shoulder-in so valuable is not just the movement itself but what performing it correctly demands of the horse: engagement of the inside hind leg, softness through the back, and suppleness through the ribcage, all qualities that are prerequisites for genuine collection. The preparation for shoulder-in begins with reliable leg yields and turns on the forehand. A horse that does not understand moving away from the inside leg without losing its forward rhythm is not ready for shoulder-in, which combines that lateral yield with sustained forward movement and a specific degree of bend. Attempting shoulder-in without those building blocks produces a horse that either loses forward momentum in the lateral movement or drifts sideways without any true bend. Under saddle, begin shoulder-in from a circle. Ride a ten-meter circle in the corner, and as the horse comes to the long side of the arena, maintain the bend of the circle while allowing the horse to travel forward down the rail. The horse's shoulders will be slightly inside the track of its hindquarters — this is the shoulder-in position. Use the inside leg to maintain bend and forward energy, the outside rein to prevent the shoulder from falling out, and a light inside rein to sustain the flex at the poll. Three tracks, forward rhythm, and consistent bend are the markers of a correct shoulder-in.
