How do I introduce a horse to harness and begin ground driving?

Introducing a horse to harness is a sequential process that presents each element of the equipment progressively, allowing the horse to accept each component before the next is added. Attempting to put a complete harness on a horse that has never worn any of its components is likely to produce a reactive, alarmed response to multiple novel sensations simultaneously. A patient, sequential introduction produces a horse that accepts the complete harness with confidence rather than tolerance through force. The introduction typically begins with the surcingle or backpad worn during ordinary handling and groundwork until the horse shows no concern about it. Once the surcingle is accepted, the breeching can be added and the horse walked in hand until the sensation of the breeching against the hindquarters during movement is processed and accepted. The bridle with blinders is introduced next, as the restriction of peripheral vision that blinders create is unfamiliar and potentially disorienting. Ground driving — guiding the horse through lines held by a person walking behind rather than riding — is the foundational skill that bridges from halter work to actual driving. The horse must learn to accept a person walking behind it, to respond to line pressure for direction and pace, and to whoa reliably from the lines before any vehicle is introduced. Ground driving in a controlled environment with an experienced handler at the horse's head during the early sessions provides safety backup while the horse develops understanding of the line communication. Many sessions of ground driving in varied environments should precede any introduction of the vehicle, confirming that the horse's responses to line communication are reliable before the vehicle complicates the picture.
