Driving

How does driver position and presentation affect scores in a pleasure driving class?

Driver presentation is a scored element in most pleasure driving classes and influences the overall impression even when it is not broken out as a separate judging criterion. The driver should sit centered and upright in the vehicle with quiet, steady hands and a relaxed but attentive posture. Reins should be held correctly according to the rules of the specific division and breed organization — requirements vary, and drivers should review those rules before entering a class. The whip must be carried at all times in most divisions and held correctly as an aid. Attire should be neat and appropriate for the class, typically including gloves and a hat or helmet depending on division requirements. A driver who is visibly tense, who moves excessively in the seat, or who uses heavy, obvious rein pressure detracts from the picture the entry presents. The ideal image is a driver who appears to be doing very little while the horse performs confidently and consistently — a picture that reflects thorough preparation, correct training, and quiet communication between horse and driver. Turnout of the vehicle and harness also contributes to overall presentation and should be clean and well-maintained for every class.
