Driving

How does pleasure driving differ from fine harness or park driving?

Pleasure driving is judged on the horse's suitability as a willing, balanced driving partner, while fine harness and park driving emphasize elevated action, dramatic presence, and animated brilliance. A fine harness horse is expected to carry significant knee and hock action with an upright, showy frame. A pleasure driving horse should move naturally and ground-coveringly, without forced elevation or exaggerated high-stepping. The equipment reflects this difference. Fine harness horses are typically shown in light show harness with an overcheck that sets the head in a defined position, while pleasure driving horses are shown in a wider range of harness styles suited to a more practical presentation. Driver attire in pleasure classes is neat and appropriate but not as formally prescribed as in fine harness or park divisions. Judges in pleasure classes weight manners and consistency of way of going heavily alongside movement quality, whereas fine harness judging places movement and presence at the top of the criteria. A horse with a long, sweeping natural trot and a quiet mind is often better suited for pleasure driving, while a horse with natural upward energy and carriage fits fine harness more naturally.
