Driving

What type of horse makes a good pleasure driving prospect?

Temperament is the most important quality in a pleasure driving prospect. A horse that is curious, calm under new stimuli, and genuinely accepting of the harnessing and hitching process will progress far more safely and quickly than a reactive horse with more athletic ability. The horse must be willing to work near and eventually in front of a moving vehicle without consistent anxiety. Conformation affects long-term soundness and natural way of going. A horse with a well-set neck, strong back, and correctly angled hindquarters will naturally carry itself in a balanced frame at the trot. Many breeds are well represented in pleasure driving, including Morgans, Arabians, Standardbreds, American Saddlebreds, Hackneys, and warmbloods, but horses of any breed or background with the right temperament and movement can compete successfully. A moderate, ground-covering trot is more useful in pleasure classes than extreme suspension or high knee action. The horse should accept consistent bit contact without bracing, move off rein and whip aids quietly, and stand patiently during the harnessing and hitching process, which involves handling around sensitive areas including the hindquarters and tail.
