A horse that is being constantly directed — constant pressure, constant release, constant change — is in reaction mode, not thinking mode. It is executing the current pressure stimulus, not understanding the larger communication. In contrast, a horse that is allowed to stand, process, and offer a response from its own initiative is building genuine understanding. His practical application of doing less means, for example, giving the horse more time between asks. After a yield is completed, stand still for ten seconds. Let the horse process. Notice what the horse does with that time — does it lick and chew? Lower its head? These are signs of processing and learning. Does it immediately look away and check out? That might indicate the pressure was too much. Does it crowd the handler? That indicates the handler's energy dropped too much. Schiller also recommends stopping sessions earlier than handlers typically want to. Rather than riding the horse until it performs a movement correctly, stopping when it has offered a good try — even an incomplete one — and ending with that positive note. Horses learn from the release, and a session that ends on a genuine try builds more positive association with training than a session that continues until the horse is tired and the handler is satisfied. This philosophy runs counter to the 'work until they get it right' approach that many trainers use, and Schiller supports it with observable outcomes: horses trained with more rest, more processing time, and earlier sessions typically generalize their learning better and retain it longer.
