Starting Young Horses

How long does it take to start a young horse under saddle?

The timeline for starting a young horse varies enough between individuals that any specific number of days or rides should be treated as a rough guideline rather than a target to hit. The factors that influence the timeline most are the horse's individual temperament, the quality of its earlier handling, and the experience level of the person doing the starting. A calm, well-handled horse with a trusting disposition that has been worked with regularly since foalhood will move through the early stages of starting significantly faster than a horse that is high-strung, has had minimal handling, or has had negative experiences with people. In practical terms, a horse that has good foundational ground manners and is introduced to starting correctly by an experienced hand can often be carrying a rider quietly at walk and trot within thirty to sixty days of beginning the starting process. That does not mean the horse is finished or even well-started in that timeframe — it means the very beginning of its ridden education has been established. A genuinely well-started horse that is soft, forward, steerable, and mentally confident in basic work takes considerably longer: ninety days of consistent riding is often cited as a meaningful benchmark for establishing a solid basic foundation, and many trainers consider a horse with one hundred and twenty days of correct riding to be at the beginning of its training rather than finished. Rushing the timeline to meet an external deadline — a sale, a show, a season — is one of the most common ways that horses develop anxiety, resistances, and holes in their training that take far longer to fix than it would have taken to do the job correctly from the start.
