How does failing to get in position cost headers time and catches?

Getting into the correct throwing position relative to the steer is one of the most fundamental requirements of competitive heading, and failing to achieve that position before attempting a throw is responsible for many missed catches and slow times. The correct throwing position places the header's stirrup approximately even with the steer's hip, slightly to the left of the steer's body. From this position the header has a clear throwing angle to the horns, enough distance to swing the loop correctly, and a forward trajectory that allows the loop to travel to the target without interference from the steer's body. Headers who get too far forward — even with the steer's shoulder or head — have a difficult throwing angle that requires them to throw back toward themselves, which reduces accuracy and loop control significantly. Headers who fall too far behind the steer are out of effective throwing range and must throw a longer, harder loop that is more difficult to deliver accurately. Getting into correct position requires the horse to rate correctly and the header to recognize when position has been achieved and is ready for the throw. Many headers make the mistake of throwing before position is established because they feel pressure to throw quickly. A throw from a poor position produces a missed catch far more often than a slightly slower throw from a correct position. Drilling position awareness in practice — loping alongside a steer without throwing, simply holding position until it is correct — develops the discipline to wait for the right moment rather than throwing out of sequence.
